This comes up a great deal in working with new clients in my clinic. What do you do exactly? Great question so let me answer that.
Healing Hands Therapy LLC offers several different types of therapy. Which one is best for you? My go to for most people would be a Medical/Orthopedic Massage. This type of massage will cover the majority of people that contact me for work. Though the work is direct and specific in intention is also designed specifically for you. The goal of this work is to balance the pelvis and the shoulders. It is also designed to focus on specific issues related to the pelvis, back, shoulders, or neck. It would be a great lunch break treat for yourself to schedule a 15 minutes session where one area is worked. You will get a feel for how my work feels and then you can decide if this therapy is the right one for you.
The remaining people fall into the relaxation category (Swedish or Lomi Lomi). These massages can be relaxing as well as somewhat therapeutic but relaxation would be the primary goal of this work. Through long strokes, tapping, and kneading of tissue relaxation is achieved. The pressure would be light to medium with the goal of calming the mind and body.
Myofascial Release as taught by John Barnes is more on the therapeutic side of massage. Whereas it can be light and relaxing it can also be deep and intense. If you are new to massage and this is the first time that you would be receiving work Swedish would be the way to go. Light long strokes are very relaxing and a good introduction to the therapists touch. My rule of thumb is two to three Swedish massages prior to trying something more specific like Medical Massage. The choice is yours of course.
Finally, I also offer Reflexology. Through the manipulation of reflex points on the feet it will stimulate the nerve pathways from the reflex points (or point of tenderness and discomfort) to the connected organ or area of the body. For example, you can work the spinal reflex points to determine which areas of restriction lie within the body. It can narrow down the scope of where to begin to work if massage is incorporated into the session. Most people will say after a Reflexology session that they feel "like they are walking on clouds" when they leave. Included in a Reflexology session is 2 hot towels, essential oil or lotion with a 5-minute foot massage at the end.
