The Truth About Biweekly Massages: Are They More Beneficial Than Monthly Sessions

Massage therapy has become a popular way to relieve stress, ease muscle tension, and improve overall well-being. Many people are told to schedule massages once a month, but some suggest that having a massage every two weeks might offer better results. This raises an important question: Are biweekly massages truly more beneficial than monthly sessions? In this post, we will explore the differences between these two schedules, the benefits of each, and how to decide what works best for your body and lifestyle.

Why Massage Frequency Matters

Massage therapy works by manipulating soft tissues to reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote relaxation. The frequency of massages can influence how well these benefits last and how your body responds over time.

  • Monthly massages are often recommended as a maintenance routine. They help keep muscles relaxed and reduce stress but may not be enough for people with chronic pain or high stress levels. Specific issues can be addressed during a maintenance session with more attention being paid to areas that either the therapist discovers in the assessment phase or is indicated by the client themselves

  • Biweekly massages provide more consistent care, potentially preventing muscle tightness from building up and offering ongoing relief. Recommended for clients that have a specific issue or dysfunction that needs more focused attention to address. Length (estimated) of treatments depends on several factors with the most deciding factor being the length of time that the specific issue has existed.

Understanding how your body reacts to massage and what your goals are will help you choose the right schedule. The importance of good communication between you and your therapist is of the utmost importance so that you can achieve the best result from your session.

Benefits of Monthly Massages

Monthly massages are a common recommendation because they fit well into many people's schedules and budgets. Here are some advantages:

  • Cost-effective: Fewer sessions mean lower overall costs.

  • Maintenance: Helps maintain muscle flexibility and reduce general stress.

  • Time-friendly: Easier to fit into busy lifestyles.

  • Recovery support: Useful for people who experience occasional muscle soreness or stress.

For example, someone with a desk job who experiences mild tension might find monthly massages sufficient to stay comfortable and relaxed. This is the recommendation for people who are somewhat sedentary but may tend to overdo it at times. Also, a great addition to a wellness plan or for overall general health and well-being.

Advantages of Biweekly Massages

Getting a massage every two weeks can offer deeper and more sustained benefits, especially for those with specific needs:

  • Improved muscle recovery: Athletes or physically active individuals can benefit from more frequent sessions to reduce soreness and improve performance. Beneficial for reducing lactic acid build up as well.

  • Chronic pain management: People with ongoing pain conditions may experience better symptom control.

  • Stress reduction: Regular massages can help manage stress hormones more effectively.

  • Enhanced circulation and flexibility: More frequent sessions keep muscles and joints more consistently loose.

For instance, a runner training for a marathon might schedule biweekly massages to help prevent injuries and speed up recovery.

What Science Says About Massage Frequency

Research on massage frequency is still developing, but some studies provide useful insights:

  • A study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that weekly or biweekly massages reduced anxiety and improved mood more than monthly sessions.

  • Research on chronic lower back pain showed that more frequent massages led to better pain relief and improved function.

  • Another study indicated that muscle recovery after intense exercise improved with massages given every few days compared to less frequent treatments.

These findings suggest that more frequent massages can offer stronger benefits, especially for those with specific health or fitness goals.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Massage Schedule

Choosing between biweekly and monthly massages depends on several personal factors:

Your Health Goals

  • If your goal is general relaxation and stress relief, monthly massages might be enough.

  • For pain management, injury recovery, or athletic performance, biweekly sessions could be more effective.

Your Budget

  • Biweekly massages cost more over time, so consider what fits your budget.

  • Some massage therapists offer package deals that reduce the cost per session.

Your Schedule

  • Biweekly appointments require more time commitment.

  • Monthly massages are easier to maintain for busy individuals.

Your Body’s Response

  • Pay attention to how your body feels after massages.

  • If tension returns quickly, increasing frequency might help.

  • If you feel relaxed and balanced for weeks, monthly sessions could suffice.

Practical Tips for Maximizing Massage Benefits

Regardless of how often you get massages, here are ways to make the most of each session:

  • Communicate clearly with your therapist about your needs and any pain areas.

  • Stay hydrated before and after massages to help flush out toxins.

  • Incorporate stretching or light exercise to maintain flexibility.

  • Use self-care techniques like yoga, specific stretching programs (maintaining or improving flexibility) or heat therapy between sessions.

  • Schedule sessions consistently to build a routine that supports your wellness. Scheduling out monthly helps maintain a consistent day and time which may make it easier to keep appointments.

When to Consult a Professional

If you have chronic pain, injuries, or medical conditions, consult a healthcare provider or licensed massage therapist before deciding on massage frequency. They can recommend a plan tailored to your needs and monitor your progress.

Choosing between biweekly and monthly massages depends on your unique needs, lifestyle, and goals. Biweekly massages offer more consistent relief and support for active or pain-prone individuals, while monthly sessions provide a manageable way to maintain relaxation and muscle health. Listen to your body, consider your schedule and budget, and work with your therapist to find the best rhythm for you.

The point that I am trying to make here is that more frequent massages work better for most of my current clients. They recover more efficiently and tend to have longer lasting improvement between sessions. Note that about 80% of the work is initiated on the table. The remaining 20% rests with you. My usual recommendation post session is stretching and again the type of stretching depends on your goals. Massage therapists create the space for things to move back to where they belong (inflammation may squeeze nerves and blood flow causing other issues) while the homework helps maintain the changes that happen on the table.
